Why breastfed babies spit out every pacifier.

It is almost never the baby. It is the shape in the baby's mouth. Once you understand what the tongue is actually doing, the whole problem makes sense, and it takes about two minutes to fix.

Sleeping newborn settled with a pacifier
Most parents try three to five pacifiers before they stop blaming themselves.
The part nobody warns you about

You are not doing it wrong. The shape is.

It is 2 a.m. The baby has been fed, changed and held. You offer the pacifier, the one the shop assistant recommended, the one your sister swore by. It stays in for four seconds. Then the tongue comes forward, the pacifier pops out, and the crying starts again.

So you buy another brand. And another. Most parents we talk to have three to five pacifiers in a drawer before they give up and decide their baby is simply not a pacifier baby.

"In my practice, nine out of ten families who say their baby rejects pacifiers have a shape problem, not a baby problem."

That is Nadia John, midwife, who has sat in more living rooms at 2 a.m. than most of us will in a lifetime. And her point is simple: a breastfed baby has learned exactly one way to suck. Anything that asks for a different technique gets pushed out. Not out of stubbornness. Out of reflex.

What parents usually try first

And why each one runs into the same wall.
  • A different brandSame narrow neck, same flat nipple. The tongue does the same thing it did with the last one.
  • A bigger or smaller sizeSize is not the issue. The problem is the profile in the mouth, not the millimetres.
  • Warming it, dipping it, waitingWorks for a minute or two. The reflex wins as soon as the baby relaxes.
  • Giving up on pacifiersWhich usually means mom becomes the only pacifier, all night, every night.
💡
The one thing that does change the outcome: a nipple that copies the breast, so the baby can keep the technique it already knows.

Standard pacifier A baby pushing out a standard pacifier Illustration of the natural lip posture with a breast-like pacifier

Narrow neck, flat nipple

The mouth has to close into a small O shape. That is nothing like nursing, so the baby corrects it within seconds.

  • 1
The lips pull inwardInstead of rolling out over a wide base, they purse around a thin neck.
  • 2
The tongue moves backThe flat nipple gives it nothing to cup, so it retracts and then pushes forward.
  • 3
The seal never formsNo gentle vacuum, no familiar pressure, nothing that signals safety.
Result: out it goes, usually in under ten seconds, and the crying starts again.

Wide base, breast-like nipple

The mouth opens the same way it does at the breast. The baby keeps the technique it already knows, so nothing has to be relearned.

  • The lips roll outwardThe wide, soft base asks for the same open latch as nursing.
  • The tongue stays in frontIt cups the soft nipple instead of pushing against it.
  • A gentle vacuum formsThe familiar pressure triggers the calming reflex, and the baby settles.
Result: accepted, very often on the first try, also by babies who refuse everything else.
🩺
Why this does not confuse breastfeeding: because the sucking pattern stays identical. Nipple confusion comes from asking a baby to switch technique. A breast-like pacifier does not ask for that, which is why midwives recommend this shape for breastfed babies in particular.

This is the moment thousands of parents describe in their reviews: "the only pacifier my baby accepts." Not a trick, just the shape the baby already knows.

The professional view
"Parents do not need more patience. They need a shape their baby recognises."

Nadia John has accompanied hundreds of families through the first weeks. Her observation is always the same: babies who are fed at the breast do not reject pacifiers, they reject a technique they never learned.

That is why she was part of the development of Nuckly. Two years, midwives, doctors and hundreds of test families, with one brief: it has to feel like the breast, or it is not worth making.

Contact our team
Will a pacifier interfere with breastfeeding?

Not this shape. Nipple confusion comes from asking a baby to switch sucking technique. Nuckly keeps the same pattern as nursing, which is exactly why midwives recommend it for breastfed babies instead of warning against it.

We have already tried four pacifiers. Why would this one be different?

Because the others share the same narrow profile. Your baby has not been rejecting pacifiers, it has been rejecting one particular shape. Nuckly is the breast-like category, which for most families is the one that was never tested.

From what age can we use it?

From birth. The one-size shape adapts to the baby's mouth. Like any pacifier it should be checked regularly and replaced after roughly four to eight weeks of daily use, which is why the set contains two.

Is it safe for a newborn?

Nuckly is made from 100% medical-grade silicone, free from BPA, PVC and phthalates. One single piece, no seams, no gaps, no small parts, tested to German and EU safety standards and developed together with midwives.

How do I clean it?

Boil it for a few minutes before the first use and regularly after that. No microwave, no dishwasher. One piece of silicone, nothing to take apart at 3 a.m.

What if our baby still does not take it?

Then returns are easy and our team will send you the midwife tips for the first try. Most babies accept Nuckly within the first few attempts, usually when they are calm rather than already crying.

How fast does it ship?

We ship across Europe and internationally. You receive a tracking link as soon as the order leaves the warehouse.
